YUniverse mentoring program

Yuniverse Foundation is offering a new mentoring program for high school and middle school students in the South Lakes High School and Herndon High School pyramid

Students from 7th-12th grade can sign up for a mentor to meet in person, socially distanced, for 45 minutes every other week at an outdoor covered location in Reston or Herndon. For the weeks in between in-person meetings, students and mentors will connect on the phone for a 15 minute check-in call.

Mentors are either adults in the community or 11th-12th grade students from South Lakes or Herndon high school. Students in 11th-12th grade students interested in mentoring would be assigned as mentors to younger students, in 7th-9th grades.

After learning a student’s academic goals, students would continue to meet with their mentor on a biweekly basis to talk about school and other topics of interest. With regard to school, mentors can help talk through areas where a student may need some additional help to meet their goals, and then collaborate on ways to address them over time. Mentors can also help students talk through post-high school plans, extra-curricular activities and other interests a student might be interested in sharing.
